Catchin' up with Wearhaus
It’s been a year since our first class walked through the doors at Highway1. For Throwback Thursday, we thought it’d be fun to check in and see how some of them are doing.
Let’s hand the mic to Richie Zeng of Wearhaus!
What have you been up to since Demo Day?
Since Demo Day we’ve been hard at work with product development and manufacturing preparation. We’ve been able to ramp up the DFM work for our headphones and develop much better-looking prototypes in these last few months. Now, we’re in a position where we’re happy with our prototypes and are beginning the tooling process.
Nowadays I spend most of my time preparing for our upcoming Kickstarter campaign, developing the next version of our website, and working with our software team on the mobile apps.
How’s it going funding-wise?
We raised an angel round in the spring to fund our initial pre-production work with the factory and get the ball rolling on the manufacturing process as soon as possible. In May, we opened up preorders for our product and have raised $100k to devote towards the upfront engineering costs for getting our headphones ready for production.
What’s your next milestone?
We’re close to selling enough units to fill up our first shipment of headphones. Our next big milestone is going to be launching a Kickstarter campaign for our second batch. The goal here is to reach out to Kickstarter’s strong community of music lovers and have them become a part of the Wearhaus community as well. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to be one of the first to know about the campaign launch!
We’ll be getting a few dozen sample units after our initial tooling iteration before the campaign launch, so it’ll be a lot of fun going around and showing people a close-to-final version of our product during the campaign.
What’s your biggest surprise been since Demo Day?
We’re really excited about the amount of traction we’ve gotten with our music blog. Building a brand around sharing/discovering music with other people is really important to us, and having our blog as an avenue for our followers to discover new musicians has been awesome.
Our marketing team has been killing it: our monthly readership has doubled every month since we started in May, and we’ve had the opportunity to talk with some awesome bands and artists. We’re working hard to keep up the momentum as long as we can.
Let’s talk about your biggest surprise win.
The results from our latest audio tests came in a few weeks ago, and we’re really happy about the level of quality we’ve been able to achieve. Our top priority has always been to ensure that the Wearhaus Arcs sound great and feel great, regardless of any other benefits we can offer. You can read about the details of our audio tests on our blog! We have some interesting comparison charts with other headphones in the industry as well.
Has anything about your company’s vision shifted since Demo Day?
Not really. We’ve always believed that music is one of the most powerful ways to connect with each other, and wanted to build a new listening experience around the social interactions that people have with music. What’s been really exciting is the positive feedback we’ve gotten from people that also share similar thoughts around sharing music. Their excitement has really given us an extra push to build something awesome.
What are you most looking forward to?
I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the sample units come off the assembly line. Then I can finally get a pair of Wearhaus Arc headphones to use all the time!
