Every week, we recognize the Highway1 team that was most active in the lab with the prestigious Prototyper of the Week award.
This week’s winner is Canary Instruments and their home energy monitor, which glows radiant colors that represent real-time household energy use.
Canary was busy in the lab last week, turning the beautiful renderings created by their industrial design partner into 3D prototypes. The new product renderings are beautiful on paper, but the team needed to test the LED lighting effects of each new design in the real world, as it’s a defining product feature they must get right.
Gabe and Scott used a variety of quick prototyping methods, including rolling paper around their lights and cutting circles out of different materials with the laser cutter to simulate lenses or surface treatments.
After getting a coarse idea of what they wanted through these low-resolution prototyping methods, they stepped up to 3D printing to fine-tune it.
“They went through different scales very quickly,” remarks Highway1 shop manager Rafi Ajl. “It was a fast, multi pronged prototyping process, getting the answers they needed fairly quickly and using a wide range of materials in order to do so. That’s a great use of prototyping.”
